BIG EAST Outduels MAAC in EGFC MAAC-BIG EAST Rocket League Challenge

BIG EAST teams win four out of six matches to claim the challenge title 

NEW YORK – In the first of two EGFC MAAC-BIG EAST Challenges scheduled over a two-month period, the BIG EAST Conference outlasted gamers from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Saturday, 4-2.

Produced by the Electronic Gaming Federation (EGF), the governing body for Division I collegiate sports, six BIG EAST teams faced off against six teams from the MAAC in Rocket League in best-of-five series. The conferences will once again meet up on Jan. 28 in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

On Saturday, the BIG EAST took an early 2-0 lead in the challenge when St. John’s blew past Niagara 3-0 in a best-of-five series, while DePaul also earned a 3-0 sweep against Canisius.

Overall, in the trio of matches, the Red Storm outscored the Purple Eagles, 10-2, while the Blue Demons dominated the Golden Griffins, 17-2.

In the next set of matches played on Saturday, Xavier edged Siena, 3-2, while Butler came up short against Fairfield, 3-2.

Xavier took the opening match of the five-game series, 4-1, before suffering a 6-0 defeat in the second game. The pair of squads once again split the third and fourth games, before Xavier earned the hard-fought series victory with a 2-1 triumph in the final.

Meanwhile, Butler jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the series, before Fairfield secured the final two matches, 1-0 and 4-3, respectively.

In the remaining two matches, Seton Hall secured the BIG EAST victory with a sweep of Iona, while UConn got edged by Marist, 3-2.

The Pirates outscored the Gaels, 12-5, in the trio of games to clinch the challenge for the BIG EAST conference.

In a back-and-forth match against Marist, the Huskies and Red Foxes both tallied 12 goals over the five-match series, however Marist secured the win with a 3-1 triumph in the final game.
