EGF Announces New Division I Collegiate Power Series

New York, NY (April 16, 2020) The Electronic Gaming Federation (EGF) today unveiled plans to host the EGF Collegiate Power Series designed to allow Division I universities nationwide to compete to crown a national champion.  This tournament has been moved to a stay-at-home competitive environment and will feature Rocket League competition streamed on Twitch, Mixer and YouTube, so fans from all schools can share in the bracketed tournament action.

The EGF Collegiate Power Series features a multi-week qualifying round starting on April 20th, that progresses to a championship bracket that will decide a winner on May 10th.  The tournament features 38 schools including: USC, UCLA, Cal Berkeley, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Missouri, Syracuse and Washington State. The BIG EAST conference jumped on board early to form an entire division and has already started competition in the qualifying round. Full list of teams is below.

“We worked directly with universities during this time of Covid-19 and the massive shift to online education for the remainder of this school year and realized the great opportunity and need for community, consistent engagement and meaningful competition,” said Eric Johnson, CEO, EGF. “This tournament permits top varsity teams to stay connected and compete nationally with other Division I programs. We’re excited to share the rivalry matches as these big name schools go head to head.”

The esports (competitive video games) industry is on fire: having generated more than $1 billion globally in 2019.  Industry analysts have estimated that over 2 billion people worldwide play or watch esports across all gaming titles. By 2022, the growth of esports from a competition and viewer standpoint is expected to exceed 300 million participants. Collegiate programs began in earnest in 2015 and now feature more than 200 teams in the U.S.
